Unlikely nursery for new planets is next to massive black hole

3/25/2015

Blobs of planet-forming dust swirl within three light-years of Milky Way center, study claims

As if the menagerie of known worlds in the Milky Way weren’t strange enough, now there might be solar systems forming within three light-years of the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy. This harsh environment is a dangerous place for planets, which risk getting torn away by the black hole if they even form at all.

Even breeding like bunnies can’t save some mammals in Florida's Everglades National Park from the invading Burmese pythons.
When summer heats up, these snakes become more active. And in a new study, they started eating marsh rabbits in alarming numbers. Each week, the snakes there were gobbling up to one in every five bunnies in some test areas, scientists now report. Over the long term, losing those once-abundant rabbits at this rate is “not even close to sustainable,” says Robert McCleery. He’s a biologist at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

WAITING PATIENTLY FOR PHILAE

3/20/2015

For the past eight days, Rosetta has been sending signals to Philae and listening for a response, but the lander has not yet reported back...

Perhaps it is still too cold for the Philae lander to wake up on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Maybe its power resources are not yet sufficient to send a signal to the team at the DLR Lander Control Center. On 12 March 2015, the Rosetta orbiter began to send signals to the lander and listen for a response, but Philae has not yet reported back.
